Salmonella Contamination Sparks Dog Food Recall
Date Published: Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Salmonella-tainted dog food is being recalled in several states.

Mars Petcare US, Inc. of Tennessee announced the recall Tuesday. The company
said that it is recalling 5 lb bags of Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food because
the Salmonella contamination has the potential to make both pets and people
sick.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) said the dog food was sold in
Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The dog
food bears the UPC code 753062596 and a ³best buy² date of July 16, 2008 and
July 17, 2008. FDA tests on a sample of the food found Salmonella bacteria.
Anyone who purchased the dog food should throw it away and return the bags
for a refund.

Wal-Mart Quietly Pulled Dog Treats

Wal-Mart Inc. quietly stopped selling two brands of dog treats in July, after customers voiced concerns that the Chinese products may have caused their pets to fall ill, but no recall has been announced, a company spokeswoman confirmed.

The world's largest retailer started pulling Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading on July 26, spokeswoman Deisha Galberth said late Monday.

Wal-Mart also placed a computerized block on all cash registers to prevent workers from selling the products, Galberth said.

"When we took it off shelves at the end of July, we pulled it based on the customer feedback so we could do testing prior to announcing anything publicly," Galberth said. "That's why did not make a public announcement - it was still going through the testing process."

UPDATE: July 22nd, 2007: There have been no consumer complaints or reports regarding these products. Please read below.

Natural Balance was informed on July 21st, 2007 at 2:45 PM Pacific time by our USDA manufacturer, Castleberry Foods, in Augusta, GA, that they are doing a voluntary recall on all 15 oz. edible foods for humans as well as our Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs (
Irish Stew, Hobo Chili, Chinese Take-Out and Southern Style Dumplin's with Gravy
).

This voluntary recall is from one reported case of botulism in Castleberry's human edible Hot Dog Chili Sauce. Botulism is generally due to an improperly sealed can or a can that has become damaged, thus letting air inside. Natural Balance checks all of its cans for any kind of leakage, puffiness or damage before they are shipped, and we have found none.

However, to comply with our manufacturer, we are asking that you discontinue use and return Eatables for Dogs to your store for a full refund. We will give you more information as we get it.
