About Guapa

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: Brindle

Guapa is a Spanish Galgo who we welcomed several weeks ago.  This beautiful girl had lived in Spain and was adopted by a family in Malaga but had to be returned as the family was moving to Madrid and unfortunately could not take Guapa.  The shelter, Galgos en Familia reported that when the family dropped her off, she cried and would not leave them, it was heart breaking to watch! In the end she had to be carried in."  She eventually got used to the shelter but when we heard her little story, we had to say "yes" to Guapa.  The shelter described her as, "a sweet, affectionate girl and loves to be cuddled.  She gets on well with all the other dogs at the shelter." Guapa is 3 years old.  See below for requirements to adopt Guapa.

Since Guapa's arrival in the U.S. she has been in a foster home and this is what her foster report:

Guapa has been such a good girl, she was quite a hit down at Dewey Beach, meeting so many other greys, galgos, and people.

She rides very well in the car, settles down very quickly and loves to rest her head on whoever is sitting next to her.
Guapa is living with 2 male greys and a cat, although she has only seen the cat for brief moments, she seems excited about the cat, but is leaving him alone.
She absolutely loves playing with her toys, especially ones that squeak, and will entertain herself for awhile before climbing on the sofa for a nap. She is quiet and has only barked a few times at the deer in the yard, they and the squirrels fascinate her, as do the chipmunks and rabbit.
She is good on the leash until she sees wildlife and then will pull as if to chase, but she listens very well and is learning to leave the wildlife alone.
She is 3 years old and was in a home in Spain for 7 months before going back to the shelter, and I am amazed at how well she has adapted after the travelling and coming to a new home. She has no problem climbing the stairs, and although she has had a few accidents in the house, she sleeps through the night without a problem.
This petite little girl(only 44 lbs) will be a great addition to a home with a fenced(6ft) yard so she can run around and play.

Requirements and information to adopt
Galgos are a different breed from racing greyhounds and as such can be more energetic.
They were mostly used for hunting and are "streetwise" and like to be occupied although Guapa seems to be settled.
**They can jump and climb and we do require a minimum of a 6 foot fence for any Galgo that we adopt.
They are generally very sweet and very cute.
They usually require the company of another greyhound or dog.

The adoption fee to adopt a Galgo from GFNJ is $500 which only partially defrays the cost of transportation and vetting expenses.
If you are interested in getting more information, please call Linda at 732-356-4370. You won't regret adopting a Galgo!!
Guapa is fully vetted and has been tested negative for Leishmaniosis.
